The tiny and quaint little village of Gasquet is perched along the Smith River on U.S. Highway 199. Boasting a warmer climate, the area is known for its outdoor recreational activities. Its dramatic rocky banks and rapids make its section of the river a popular choice for challenging rafting and kayaking, although there are plenty of sandy beaches and smooth water for relaxing, too.
You’ll find dining and lodging, a village store and a small airstrip for private aircraft.
One day a year in July, Gasquet and its river waters becomes a mecca for the wackiest of river goers participating in the annual Gasquet Raft Races. Racers take home awards for being the fastest, and one lucky winner will also go home with the award for “Most Unusual Raft”. Spectators are entertained by the decorated rafts and the outfits of the competitors. This community event is for all ages and features a delicious and succulent deep pit barbeque, beer tasting, and craft vendors. See events to find out more.
